Background of the Study
Workplace stress is a common issue that affects employees across various sectors and industries. It arises from various factors, including high workloads, long working hours, role ambiguity, interpersonal conflicts, and organizational changes. The impact of workplace stress on employee productivity has become a significant concern for organizations worldwide, as it can negatively affect the well-being of employees and, consequently, their performance. United Bank for Africa (UBA), one of Nigeria's leading financial institutions, operates across the country, including Kebbi State, where it serves a diverse clientele.
In the banking sector, employees often face high-pressure environments due to tight deadlines, demanding customers, and performance targets. Such stressors can lead to physical and psychological problems such as anxiety, burnout, and depression, which can impair productivity and job satisfaction. In Kebbi State, where the banking industry faces unique socio-economic challenges, understanding how workplace stress affects employee productivity at UBA is critical to ensuring that employees remain healthy, motivated, and productive.
Although the relationship between workplace stress and productivity has been well-documented globally, the specific context of UBA in Kebbi State has not been extensively explored. This study aims to evaluate the effect of workplace stress on employee productivity at UBA, focusing on how stress influences performance and the effectiveness of stress management programs in mitigating negative outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing awareness of workplace stress, there is limited research on its impact on employee productivity in the banking sector, particularly in Kebbi State. UBA has implemented various initiatives to address employee well-being, but the effectiveness of these measures in reducing stress and improving productivity remains unclear. This study seeks to investigate the relationship between workplace stress and employee productivity at UBA in Kebbi State and to identify the factors that contribute to stress within the organization.
